Eureka! Food Porn from Newest Restaurant Addition to West Village

Cali-based restaurant concept Eureka! has moved into a very sweet corner of West Village. They invited me to visit and try some delicious things off their menu for dinner. It’s a gorgeous bar and restaurant and I think it is a very fine addition to the area. Kind of tired of all the Tex-Mex in one square mile.

Started the night off with a refreshing Moscow Mule.

For starters, the Golden Ale Mussels were yummy and plentiful. I hate it when I order mussels and half the shells are empty. This was really yummy and I will have to get it again. Wish there were a few extra pieces of toast for me to dunk into that savory sauce though.

Other starters I really enjoyed were the lollipop corn dogs and the wings. The lollipop dogs are made with polish sausage and came with three different dipping sauces. The sauces alone didn’t wow me, but I was happy with the corn dogs alone. Each one of those puppies made it into my belly. The Eureka wings weren’t half bad either. Would I come back to watch a sports game, grab a brew and order either of these appetizers? Absolutely. A restaurant like this can have a beautiful bar, but if they don’t deliver on the munchies, it’s a waste.

My friend got the fried chicken sliders and liked it enough, but wasn’t a fan of the jam spread. If you aren’t into sweet and savory, I warned you. The beef tacos I devoured in 2 minutes. Good flavor. The beef cheek was incredibly tender. I was sad that it was just the two lonely tacos. Wish it came with a side of elotes or something. The taco entree seemed incomplete.

The Naked Chicken Saltimbocca was ok, but not a very memorable dish. It was a decent portion size and if you like melted cheese and tomato on your chicken, go for it. Sort of a naked chicken parmesan. It didn’t blow me away. I appreciated the greens that came along with the dish. Next, I was eyeing the beef ragu grits. Unfortunately I was really disappointed. While the meat was well braised and season, I thought the entirety of the dish was too salty. Never thought I would say that there was too much cheese in the grits. Sorry friends! I didn’t get to taste the Bison fig burger, but enjoy the food porn! I’m pretty sure I tried almost everything on the menu except the burgers. My bad. I’ll have to come back again.

For dessert, we ordered the the Espresso soufflé. It was warm and comforting. Not too sweet. It wasn’t as light and fluffy as a typical soufflé. It was definitely more dense and resembled more of a chocolate cake and was hinging on the dry side if it were cooked any longer. Nonetheless still good. Wish there was more ice cream loaded on top or perhaps served on the side.

I love that Eureka has whisky flights. I’m definitely a whisky girl and this was the perfect night cap. They have tons of whiskies to choose from. The bar itself boasts only local brews on tap so I can assume they do the same with whiskies and only house whiskies from small or local distilleries. I didn’t recognize any of the names on the list, but truly enjoyed the Charbay.

Seeing as the restaurant has been open for about a month, the place does get pretty busy. Based only on my two visits in the same week, service is still a little spotty and the waiters aren’t as knowledgable about the menu items, beer or whisky yet. Eureka! is a great spot to grab a bite, a drink and catch a game if it’s on. I’d totally come back just to explore the whisky menu.
