Review: Mesero Miguel

Cinco Leches Cake

Highlights: The Cinco Leches Cake. Mesero Miguel wasn’t bad, but it didn’t blow my mind. I’d recommend the braised pork, cheese enchiladas, the cinco leches cake, and of course the Herradurra tequila.

Official Review: I personally think it’s difficult to find “fine dining” restaurants for Latin and Asian foods. I think Mesero Miguel came pretty close to it (maybe next to La Duni? Suggestions?), but it’s not going to be my go-to by any means. Perhaps I am biased because when I think Latin and even Asian foods, I think more along the lines of quantity and quality. Tiny portions of enchiladas gets you slapped.

Duck Confit Tacos

The menu was very diverse and it made my mouth water reading the interesting descriptions. I decided to try the Duck Confit Tacos, which almost every Yelper basically had a conniption over, and I was pretty disappointed. I’m used to juicy and tender duck meat, but in my tacos, the meat was very dry, tough, and almost chewy. I liked the slaw that gave an additional layer of crunch to the taco, but it wasn’t the best. The rice was pretty on point. No one likes bland Mexican rice.

The great thing about eating out with friends is getting to share plates! So I was excited to sample other dishes to get a better feel of the restaurant quality. Here’s a low down of what I thought:

Chip and Queso

Queso: When ordering queso, everyone got one chip with a dollop of their white queso. Quite strange.  It was savory, but there just wasn’t enough of it.

Carne Asada

Carne Asada: The rice was good, but I thought the meat was a little dry. It had a decent flavor profile overall. My friend said she really liked it.

Tomatillo and Cheese Enchilada

Cheese Enchilada: I usually don’t care for enchiladas, but the cheese enchilada was pretty good. There was good flavor and of course a wonderful amount of cheese.

Braised Pork: This was second on my list of what I was intending to order and I wish I had. The pork was incredibly tender and delicious. Sorry I didn’t grab a picture. Guess you’ll just have to see for yourself.

I think the concept is promising, but I was not a fan of how tiny all the portions were. $12 for 2 enchiladas or 2 tacos…yea it better be amazing, but that wasn’t the case.

Truly, the only highlight would be the Cinco Leches Cake. It was creamy, sweet, and melted in your mouth. Can you name all 5 milks that went into the make of this? I can’t. Good thing the waiter knew his cake: Whole milk, half & half, condensed milk, evaporated milk, and Cajeta, a goat milk that is turned into a sweet, caramelized syrupy confection.

Would I come back? Meh…maybe if there was a special occasion, but I wouldn’t just randomly crave Mesero Miguel and go on a whim. I’d only come back for cake. The cake saved you Mesero Miguel!
