Re-Review: Origin Kitchen and Bar

In a March blog, I raved about a fantastic new brunch spot called Origin Kitchen and Bar. I loved that they serve Cultivar coffee and the menu was interesting. The venue was small, but lively and it was a place I would recommend to anyone who wanted to brunch.

After so many months, I decided to revisit and brought some good friends with me. This particular morning I just wanted something I knew was going to be delicious and wasn’t quite in the adventurous mood for something new.

I’m heartbroken to say, I would never recommend this place. Ever. Again. I’ve taken it off my recommendations list for sure.

My experience from when I walked in through the door till the very end wasn’t pleasant at all (Ok, our service wasn’t fantastic, but my waiter was super nice). The part that probably pissed me off the most was when the hostess coldly greeted us with “Do you have a reservation?” Seriously woman, please smile. When I ask for a table for three, I obviously don’t have a reservation otherwise I would’ve said so. Then she put us on hold to see what she can do.

The place is tiny. I spotted at least 5 empty tables and then she gathered her wits and sat us down. Ain’t nobody got time for rudeness on a Sunday morning. Reminiscing about that hostess makes my blood boil all over again, but I digress. I’m here for the food.

Between the three of us, we ordered two vanilla almond milk lattes, the Chilaquiles, Creme Brûlée French Toast, and eggs, bacon, and pancakes a la carte. Nothing was as outstanding as I remembered. Not even the coffee that bequeathed my heart for Cultivar, making me a fan for life.

My Chilaquiles, which is a bowl of pulled pork with gouda, sharp cheddar, over easy egg topped with a rosemary salsa, sounded so delicious until I actually tried it. The salsa was overwhelming and there was too much of it. I couldn’t taste anything else. My egg was definitely not over-easy. I would’ve liked for the yolk to drizzle over the dish and maybe cut the saltiness of the salsa. It’s a dish you can easily get tired of after a few bites. I didn’t finish it.

The Creme Brûlée french toast still had it’s amazing flavor profile but was dry. What is up with the inconsistency here?! You’re breaking my heart man!

The breakfast platter of eggs, bacon and pancakes weren’t that memorable. The only compliment they got was that the bacon slices were at least thick.

Service was really slow, but our waiter was nice. I can’t say that I’ll ever go back after that awful performance. I’ll spend my money elsewhere. Sorry, Origin, you totally lost my business.
